Gloria Gordon Bolotsky was an amazing American computer scientist. She was born on July 28, 1921, and passed away on June 30, 2009. Gloria was one of the very first people to program the ENIAC computer. This was a huge and important computer built a long time ago.

Early Life and Education

Gloria Ruth Gordon was born in New York City. She first went to a nursing school. However, she later changed her mind. She decided to study mathematics instead. Gloria earned her degree in math from Brooklyn College.

In 1948, she married Max Bolotsky. He was a metallurgist, which means he studied metals. They lived in Rockville, Maryland, and had five daughters.

Working with Computers

Starting Her Career

Before working with computers, Gloria was a mathematician. She worked at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. In the 1940s, she moved to Philadelphia. There, she joined the engineering school at the University of Pennsylvania.

Programming the ENIAC

Gloria was part of a big team of about 100 scientists. They all worked on programming the ENIAC computer. The ENIAC was designed to help the US Army. It calculated special tables for artillery firing. Six women did the first programming for this huge machine.

In 1946, Life magazine showed a photo of the ENIAC. Two women were working on it. One woman was crouching, and this was Gloria Gordon. The other woman was her co-worker, Ester Gerston. At the time, the magazine did not say who they were.

Later Work and Contributions

In 1947, Gloria moved to Maryland. She joined a secret group at the Aberdeen Proving Ground. In the 1950s, she taught high school math for a year in Towson.

In 1963, she started working at the National Bureau of Standards. This was in Gaithersburg. She worked there for 20 years. Gloria helped with computer networking. This means connecting computers together. She also worked on putting networks into phone systems. She found ways to make these systems work better and cost less.

Later Years

Gloria Bolotsky's husband, Max, passed away in 1998. They had been married for 49 years. Gloria herself died from cancer on June 30, 2009. She passed away in Gaithersburg, Maryland. She was buried in King David Memorial Gardens in Falls Church, Virginia.
