Gloria Lim (born in 1930) is a famous Singaporean scientist. She is a mycologist, which means she studies fungi (like mushrooms and molds). Her work focused on fungi found in tropical places. She also created a special collection of fungi samples from the region.

Gloria Lim made history by becoming the first woman to be the Dean of the Faculty of Science at the University of Singapore. She held this important role twice! After she retired from the university, she became the first Director of Singapore's National Institute of Education. She helped this institute start its own university degree programs. She also served on the Public Service Commission for 14 years, again as the first woman to do so. Later, she worked for the Community Mediation Unit, helping to solve community problems. She has received many awards for her amazing contributions to science and education in Singapore.

Early Life and Education

Gloria Lim was born in Singapore in 1930. Even though her girls' school didn't teach science, she loved learning. She graduated from the University of Singapore in 1954 with top honors in botany, which is the study of plants.

She continued her studies and earned a Diploma in Education in 1956. In 1957, she received a Master's degree in plant pathology from the University of Malaya. Plant pathology is about plant diseases.

Becoming a Mycologist

Lim first taught at the Raffles Girls' School. Later, she also taught botany at the University of Malaya. She would teach at the school in the mornings and at the university in the afternoons.

She received a special scholarship that allowed her to study at the University of London. In 1961, she earned her doctorate degree. Then, she went to the University of California, Berkeley, in the United States, between 1966 and 1967. It was during this time that she became a specialist in fungi, a mycologist.

Scientific Discoveries

When Gloria Lim returned to Singapore, she became a leading expert on fungi. She built up a special collection of different fungal species from the region. This collection was very important for understanding local fungi.

She wrote many research papers and advised universities and businesses both in Singapore and other countries. For example, she helped a company that was developing medicines from mushrooms. She also assisted the Singaporean Ministry of Defence when mold grew in their storage bunkers. Sadly, after her retirement, the collection of fungi she had built was taken apart.

Academic Leadership

In 1973, Gloria Lim was chosen to be the Dean of the Faculty of Science at the University of Singapore. This was a big achievement because she was the first woman to ever hold this position! She served as Dean for four years.

She was appointed Dean again in 1979. However, she stepped down in 1980 when the University of Singapore merged with another university, Nanyang University. She did this to allow the former Dean of Nanyang University to continue in the role.

Important Roles

In 1982, she became the first woman to serve on the Public Service Commission (PSC). This commission helps manage Singapore's public service. In 1985, she became the first woman to lead the Department of Botany at the National University of Singapore (NUS), which was formed after the merger.

Lim retired from NUS in 1991. After that, she took on a new challenge as the first director of the National Institute of Education (NIE). Her main goal was to help the NIE become a fully recognized university. By the time she retired in 1994, the NIE was offering bachelor's, master's, and even doctorate degrees.

Community Work

From 2003 to 2011, Gloria Lim worked as the general manager of the Community Mediation Unit (CMU). This group helps people in the community solve their disagreements peacefully.

Awards and Recognitions

Gloria Lim has received many honors for her hard work and contributions. In 1993, she was given the Bintang Bakti Masyarakat (Public Service Star) award. This was for her excellent service on the Public Service Commission, where she continued to serve until 1996.

In July 1999, she received an honorary Doctorate of Science from Loughborough University in England. This award recognized her important contributions to science and education in Singapore.

In 2005, the National University of Singapore honored her with the Distinguished Science Alumni Award. In 2014, Gloria Lim was one of the very first people to be included in the Singapore Women's Hall of Fame. This special hall celebrates women who have made a big difference in Singapore.
