What is a Historic District?
A historic district is a special area with buildings, objects, or sites that are important to history. These places are protected to keep their unique look and story alive. The Glover Street area is a great example of how neighborhoods grew over time.
Early Homes (1880s)
The land where Glover Street is now was once part of the Clarke-Glover Farm. In the 1880s, some of the first homes were built here. These were small, one-and-a-half-story cottages. They were built in the Gothic style. Six of these homes still have fancy "jigsaw-cut bargeboard trim." This is a type of decorative wood trim. These homes are some of the best examples of their kind in Southbridge. During this time, a house and barn were also built. They had an Italianate Victorian style, which means they had features like low-pitched roofs and tall windows.
Newer Homes (1910s-1930s)
A second wave of building happened from the 1910s to the 1930s. More modest-sized houses were added to the neighborhood. Most of these homes are in the Colonial Revival style. This style brings back popular designs from early American colonial homes. There is also one house with a mix of Bungalow and Craftsman styles. These styles often feature natural materials and simple, practical designs.
One very old house in the district was built even before Glover Street existed. It's a simple wooden house from the early 1800s. It faces High Street, right at the corner with Glover Street. This house might have belonged to the Clarke family, who owned the land.
Why is it Important?
The Glover Street Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. This means it is recognized as an important historical place in the United States. It helps us understand how neighborhoods and homes changed over time in Southbridge.
