The Glyndon Historic District is a special area in Glyndon, Baltimore County, Maryland. It's like a snapshot of a community from the late 1800s and early 1900s. This district started as a popular summer vacation spot.
Most of the buildings here are homes. There is also a small business area near Butler Road and the old Western Maryland Railway tracks. The Emory Grove Campground, which is part of the district, is used during the summer.
The buildings in Glyndon have a similar look. They often show styles from the late 19th century. Many are two-and-a-half-story wooden cottages. They usually have one or two-story porches on the front.
This historic district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. This means it is recognized as an important place in American history.
Emory Grove: A Summer Community
Emory Grove was started in 1868. It is a special campground that began as a place for summer visitors. The Hotel at Emory Grove was first used by tourists and people traveling by train.
The small homes, called cottages, were originally tents. Later, in the 1900s, these tents were changed into one-story wooden cabins with porches. People who live at Emory Grove enjoy spending their summers there. They like the quiet, outdoor environment with their families.
Historic Buildings at Emory Grove
Emory Grove has several important historic buildings. These include The Hotel, the Tabernacle, and the Temple.
- The Tabernacle is in the center of Emory Grove. It is used for Sunday services and singing hymns. In recent years, people at Emory Grove have worked to fix up both the Tabernacle and The Hotel.
- The Temple was once used for Bible studies and Sunday school lessons. Children still use it today.
- The Hotel is now used by residents for special events. These events include holiday parties, celebrations, plays, and dinners.
Most of the cottages are one-story cabins with porches. Only one cottage at Emory Grove has two stories.
