Getting Around Goat Island
Goat Island is connected to other places by bridges, making it easy to travel to and from.
Highway 6 and Bridges
Highway 6 is a main road that crosses Goat Island. It connects the island to bigger areas.
The Little Current Swing Bridge
To get to Goat Island from Manitoulin Island, you cross the Little Current Swing Bridge. This bridge is quite old! It was first built in 1913 for trains. Later, in 1946, it was changed so cars and trucks could use it too. It's a special kind of bridge that can swing open to let boats pass through the water below.
Connecting to Great La Cloche Island
On the other side of Goat Island, Highway 6 continues across a fixed bridge to Great La Cloche Island. A fixed bridge means it doesn't move or open.
Goat Island Road
Besides Highway 6, there's another road called Goat Island Road. This road circles the western part of the island. It's mostly a service road, meaning it's used for local access. One part of Goat Island Road ends in a cul-de-sac, which is a dead-end street with a loop for turning around.
Life on Goat Island
Even though Goat Island is small, it has a few interesting features and one community.
The Community of Turner
The only community you'll find on Goat Island is called Turner. It's a small settlement that's part of the larger town of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands.
Local Businesses and Facilities
Goat Island has a few industrial and recreational spots.
- A small tank farm is located here. This is where chemicals are stored for the EB. Eddy company's plant in Espanola, Ontario.
- If you like golf, you might visit the Goat Island Range. This is a golf driving range where people can practice hitting golf balls.
- You can also find two transformer stations on the island. These stations help manage and distribute electricity.
