Godoy Cruz is a city located in the Mendoza province of Argentina. It is home to over 190,000 people, according to the 2010 census. This city is part of the larger metropolitan area around Mendoza, which is the capital city of the province.
History of Godoy Cruz
Godoy Cruz has a rich history. It was first known as Villa de San Vicente starting in 1872. Later, in 1889, its name changed to Villa Belgrano.
On February 9, 1909, the area officially became a city. It was given its current name, Godoy Cruz, to honor Dr. Tomás Godoy Cruz. He was a very important person from Mendoza. He represented the province in the Congress of Tucumán, which was a key meeting in Argentina's history. Dr. Godoy Cruz also served as a governor and a lawmaker for the province.

One of the most well-known teams is Godoy Cruz Antonio Tomba. This club plays in the Argentine Primera División, which is the top professional football league in Argentina.
Another important club is Andes Talleres Sport Club. This team competes in the Argentine Regional Tournament. Sometimes, these two teams would play against each other in a special match called the "Clásico Mendocino," or the "Mendocino Derby." However, they haven't played competitively since 1993 because they are in different leagues.
