Godwin Elliot Loraine Friday, born on September 28, 1959, is an important politician from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. He is currently the Prime Minister of his country, a role he took on in November 2025. He also leads a political group called the New Democratic Party (NDP) since 2016.
Mr. Friday has been a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Northern Grenadines area since 2001. Before becoming Prime Minister, he was the Leader of the Opposition from 2016 until November 2025. This means he led the main group of politicians who were not in charge of the government.
He was first chosen to be a Member of the House of Assembly in the 2001 general election. He won his seat again in elections held in 2005, 2010, 2015, 2020, and 2025. In the 2025 general election, his New Democratic Party won many seats. They defeated the party led by Ralph Gonsalves, and Mr. Friday became the Prime Minister.
Godwin Friday's Early Life and Schooling
Godwin Friday was born on September 28, 1959, on an island called Bequia. Bequia is the second-largest island in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. It is also the biggest island in the Grenadines group.
He went to university in Canada. He studied history and political science at the University of Waterloo. He earned a special degree called a Bachelor of Arts. Later, he studied law at Queen's University in Ontario. This degree is called a Bachelor of Laws.
Mr. Friday continued his studies. He earned a master's degree in history from the University of Waterloo in 1985. In 1989, he received a doctorate in political studies from Queen's University. A doctorate is a very advanced university degree.
Godwin Friday's Journey in Politics
In 2016, the leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP), Arnhim Eustace, stepped down. Godwin Friday then became the new leader of the party. He also became the Leader of the Opposition. This meant he was the main voice for the political parties not in power.
He led the NDP in the 2020 general election. His party received more votes overall. However, they did not win enough seats to form the government.
Then came the 2025 general election. This was a very important election. Mr. Friday's NDP won a big victory. They secured 14 out of 15 seats in the House of Assembly. This allowed them to form the government. It was the first time the NDP had been in charge since 1998. Godwin Friday became the Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
