Dame Susan Dilys Dougan was born on March 3, 1955. Her maiden name was Ryan. She is a very important leader in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Since August 1, 2019, she has been the Governor-General. This means she is the representative of the King or Queen in her country. She is also the first woman ever to hold this high office.

Dame Susan has received special honors for her work. On January 29, 2020, she was made a Dame Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George. Susan Dilys Dougan was born in a village called Colonarie in Saint Vincent. She studied hard and earned a Master's degree in Curriculum and Evaluation. She received this degree from the University of Southampton in England.

Dame Susan Dougan started her career as a teacher. She worked her way up in the teaching field for 34 years. She became the Headmistress of the St. Vincent Girls High School from 2001 to 2004. After that, she served as the Chief Education Officer from 2004 to 2009. This role meant she was in charge of education for the whole country.

Later, from October 2009 to September 2013, she worked as the Cabinet Secretary. This is a very important job, helping the government run smoothly.

Dame Susan also took on other important roles for her country. She was a representative for Saint Vincent and the Grenadines at the Organization of American States. She also represented her country at the Commonwealth of Learning. In addition, she was the Chief Shelter Manager for Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. This role is very important during natural disasters.

In December 2014, she was appointed as the Governor-General's Deputy. This meant she could help the Governor-General. On August 1, 2019, Dame Susan made history. She was sworn in as the first female Governor-General of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. A High Court Justice named Brian Cottle gave her the official oaths.
