Dame Susan Dilys Dougan is a very important leader. She has been the Governor-General of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines since August 1, 2019. She is also the first woman ever to hold this important job!

She received special honors for her hard work. On January 29, 2020, she was made a Dame Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George. This is a very high award. She also received the Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2010. These awards recognized her great service to education and public work.

Susan Dilys Dougan was born in a village called Colonarie. This village is in Saint Vincent. She studied hard and earned a special degree. Her degree was in Curriculum and Evaluation from the University of Southampton in England.

Starting as a Teacher

Dame Susan Dougan started her career as a teacher. She worked for 34 years in the teaching field. She moved up through different roles.

Leading Schools and Education

From 2001 to 2004, she was the Headmistress of the St. Vincent Girls High School. After that, she became the Chief Education Officer. She held this important position from 2004 to 2009.

Working for the Government

Dame Susan also worked as the Cabinet Secretary. This role is very important in the government. She served as Cabinet Secretary from October 2009 to September 2013.

International and National Roles

She has also helped her country in many other ways. She was a representative for Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. She worked with the Organization of American States. She also represented her country at the Commonwealth of Learning. This group helps with education across many countries. She also served as the Chief Shelter Manager for her country. This means she helped organize safe places for people during emergencies.

Becoming Governor-General

In December 2014, she was appointed as the Governor-General's Deputy. This prepared her for an even bigger role. On August 1, 2019, Dame Susan was sworn in as the first female Governor-General. High Court Justice Brian Cottle led the ceremony. Many important people, family, and friends were there to see her take the oath.
