The Goeng or Gureng were an Aboriginal Australian people. Aboriginal Australians are the first people who lived on the Australian continent. The Goeng people lived in the state of Queensland, Australia. Their home was in the area where the city of Gladstone is today.

Goeng Lands and Home

The Goeng people lived on their traditional lands for a very long time. These lands were their home and provided everything they needed. According to a researcher named Norman Tindale, their country covered about 1,200 square miles (3,100 square kilometers).

Their land stretched from the southern part of Port Curtis down to the mouth of Baffle Creek. Inland, their territory reached the start of the Kolan River and included the ManyPeaks Range. Places like Lowmead were also part of their country. Their land even touched the area near Miriam Vale.

Over time, the Goeng people were known by several different names. These names were sometimes used by other groups or by early European settlers. Some of these names include:

  • Goonine
  • Yungkono
  • Meeroni
  • Maroonee, Meerooni
  • Wide Bay tribe (This name was noted by Palmer in 1884)
