The Golden Melody Awards (also known as GMA) are super important music awards in Taiwan. They are given out by Taiwan's Ministry of Culture. These awards celebrate the best music in different languages. These include Mandarin, Taiwanese Hokkien, Hakka, and Formosan languages.
A special group of judges votes for the winners. Many people think the Golden Melody Awards are like the Grammy Awards for the Chinese-speaking world. They are also similar to other big awards in Taiwan. These are the Golden Bell Awards for TV and the Golden Horse Awards for movies.
The very first Golden Melody Awards happened on January 6, 1990. Over the years, the awards have changed a bit. In 1997, they were split into two main parts. One part was for popular music, and the other was for traditional music. Since 2007, these two parts have had their own separate award shows.
The 31st and 32nd award shows were held later than planned. This was because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The 33rd awards ceremony was held on July 2, 2022. It took place in Kaohsiung, a city in Taiwan. This was the first time it returned to Kaohsiung since the 16th awards. The 35th Golden Melody Awards was held on June 29, 2024. The 36th Golden Melody Awards was held on June 28, 2025.
