Discovering Goldville's Past
Goldville got its name because a lot of gold was found there! This discovery made the area very popular. At one time, the town's temporary post office handled more mail in a single day than the much larger New York City.
How Goldville Grew and Shrank
Goldville was officially made a town on January 25, 1843. It grew quickly and became one of the biggest cities in Alabama. Its population reached nearly 5,000 people.
However, things changed when the California Gold Rush started in 1849. Many people left Goldville to search for gold in California. This caused Goldville to become a "dormant municipality," meaning it was no longer an active, thriving town. But don't worry, Goldville was brought back to life and officially reinstated on July 9, 1973!
