Golfo Nuevo (which means "New Gulf" in Spanish) is a large bay or gulf located in the Chubut province of Argentina. It's part of the beautiful Patagonia region. This gulf is shaped by the Península Valdés, a famous peninsula, and a point of land called Punta Ninfas.

Golfo Nuevo is about 1,046 kilometers (650 miles) southwest of Buenos Aires, Argentina's capital city. The main city and seaport on its shores is Puerto Madryn.

Amazing Wildlife in Golfo Nuevo

Golfo Nuevo is a very special place for wildlife, especially for giant southern right whales. Every year, from May to December, these magnificent whales travel to the calm waters of Golfo Nuevo. They come here to breed and have their babies.

Because so many whales visit, Golfo Nuevo has become a popular spot for tourists. People come from all over the world to watch these incredible creatures, often taking boat tours from Puerto Madryn.

A Look at Golfo Nuevo's History

The first European to visit this area was Ferdinand Magellan in 1520. He was a famous explorer who sailed around the world. Magellan called this bay "Bahía Sin Fondo," which means "Bottomless Bay."

Later, in the 18th century, Welsh settlers arrived in the region. They renamed the bay "Bahía Nueva," which means "New Bay" in Spanish, or "Bae Newydd" in Welsh. This is how Golfo Nuevo got its current name. For a time, it was also known as "Bahía de San Matías."
