Puerto Madryn (which means Madryn Port in Welsh) is a city in the Chubut area of Argentine Patagonia. It is also known simply as Madryn. This city is the main town of the Viedma Department. In 2022, about 103,175 people lived there.
Puerto Madryn is located on the Golfo Nuevo (New Gulf). This gulf is protected by the Península Valdés and Punta Ninfas. The city is a very important place for tourists. Many people visit to see the amazing nature of the Península Valdés and the nearby coast.
The city's name honors Love Jones Parry. He was one of the first people to explore and settle Patagonia. The name was first used around 1863. Love Jones Parry and Lewis Jones traveled to Patagonia to see if it was a good place for a Welsh colony.
A new shopping mall in the city center has helped tourism grow a lot. This makes Puerto Madryn a more exciting place for visitors from Argentina and other countries. The city is also connected to Nefyn, a small town in North Wales. This connection comes from its strong link to Welsh culture.
In 2006, a rugby match between Wales and Argentina was played in Puerto Madryn. Argentina won the game 27–25. Puerto Madryn has two football (soccer) teams. They are Club Social y Atlético Guillermo Brown and Deportivo Madryn.
There is also a basketball team called Deportivo Puerto Madryn. They play in the Liga Nacional de Básquetbol (LNB). Their home games are held at the Deportivo Puerto Madryn Arena.
El Tehuelche Airport is about 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the city center. You can find flights from Buenos Aires, Ushuaia, and other Argentine cities. Many tourists fly into Trelew Airport instead. This is because flights into Puerto Madryn are limited to protect the environment.
Geography and Climate
Puerto Madryn is in the Chubut region. It sits on the Golfo Nuevo. This gulf is formed by the Valdés Peninsula and Punta Ninfas. The city has a cold desert climate. This means it is very dry.

History of Puerto Madryn
The city was started on July 28, 1865. About 150 Welsh immigrants arrived on a ship called the Mimosa. They named the natural port Porth Madryn. This was to honor Sir Love Jones-Parry. His home in Wales was named Madryn.
Life was hard for the first settlers. They had to dig ditches to bring water to their crops. The town grew when the Central Chubut Railway was built. Welsh, Spanish, and Italian immigrants helped build this railway. It opened in 1889. The railway connected Puerto Madryn to Trelew through the Chubut River valley.
Puerto Madryn was also where Argentine soldiers returned after the 1982 war. They came back on ships like the SS Canberra and MV St. Edmund.

Puerto Madryn has special connections with other cities around the world. These are called "sister cities" or "twin towns."
