Trelew is a city in the eastern part of the Chubut Province in Argentina. It is located in Patagonia, a large region in South America. Trelew is the biggest city in the low valley of the Chubut River. In 2010, about 97,915 people lived there. The city's name comes from the Welsh words tre (meaning "town") and "Lew" from Lewis Jones, who helped found the city.
Trelew is a very important place for business and industry in its region. It's especially known for processing wool. About 90 percent of all wool processing in Argentina happens here! This wool is then sent to other countries from ports like Puerto Madryn and Puerto Deseado.
The city is also home to the Museum of Paleontology Egidio Feruglio. This museum shows off amazing fossils from the Patagonia region. It's considered one of the most important museums of its kind in South America. Trelew also has an Astronomic and Planetary Observatory where you can learn about stars and planets.
The city has an airport called Almirante Marcos A. Zar Airport. It is used by both regular people and the military. The airport's runway is shared with a naval base. This base is home to special planes used by the Argentine Naval Aviation.

History of Trelew
Trelew's story is closely connected to the Welsh settlement in Argentina. In the early 1860s, leaders like Captain Sir Thomas Duncombe Love Jones-Parry and Lewis (Luis) Jones worked with the Argentine government. The city was named Trelew to honor Lewis Jones. Tre means "town" in the Welsh language, and "Lew" is a short form of Lewis.
Trelew was officially started on October 20, 1886. It was the starting point for the Central Chubut Railway. This railway was built to connect the lower Chubut River Valley to Puerto Madryn. Building equipment and 400 settlers arrived on July 28, 1886, on a ship called the Vesta. The railway opened in 1888. Later, it was made longer, going from Trelew to Gaiman, Dolavon, and finally to Las Plumas. The railway stopped running in 1961.
A Difficult Time in 1972
Trelew was the location of a sad event in 1972. Some political prisoners tried to escape from a federal prison. A small group managed to get on a plane and fly to safety. The others gave up and were sent back to a military prison. Later, some of these prisoners died.
After this, the military searched Trelew. Many local people were taken to a prison in Buenos Aires. Almost everyone in Trelew went on strike to protest. They succeeded in getting the prisoners released. These events were written about in a book called La Pasión según Trelew by Tomás Eloy Martínez.

Every October, Trelew hosts an annual Eisteddfod. This is a traditional festival that celebrates Welsh culture. People from all over Argentina and even from Wales come to enjoy it. It's a special way to see Welsh traditions in South America.
The old Trelew railway station is now a museum. It's called El Museo Regional Pueblo de Luis and has been a museum since 1984. It was made a national historic monument in 1969.
