About the Gonatista major Mantis
This praying mantis is known for its size. It is generally larger than some of its close relatives, like G. grisea and G. reticulata. It also tends to be lighter in color than these other mantises.
What Makes It Special?
In 2008, a scientist who studies insects, called an entomologist, looked closely at Gonatista major. He compared it to other mantis species. He noted that its wing color is lighter. It has dark spots on its wings, called infuscation of the elytra. These spots are larger and more spread out than in some other species.
The scientist, A. N. Caudell, also shared some measurements for the male mantises:
- The length of their pronotum (the part behind the head) is about 13.5 to 14.5 millimeters.
- Their elytra (front wings) are about 45 to 48 millimeters long.
Interestingly, at that time, the female Gonatista major mantis was not yet known to scientists.
