Gondwanatheria were a group of ancient mammals that are now extinct. They lived a very long time ago, from the Upper Cretaceous period until the end of the Eocene period. This means they were around between 70.6 and 33.9 million years ago!

These unique mammals lived in the southern parts of the world. These lands were once joined together in a huge supercontinent called Gondwana.

Scientists only know about Gondwanatheria from a few teeth and some lower jaw bones. Because of these small pieces, it's hard for scientists to know exactly how they are related to other animals.

What Were Gondwanatheria?

Gondwanatheria were a special group of mammals. They are part of a larger group called Allotheria. This group includes some of the earliest known mammals.

Scientists study their fossils to learn about them. The shape of their teeth gives clues about what they ate. Their teeth were often complex, suggesting they might have eaten plants.

Where Did Gondwanatheria Live?

Fossils of Gondwanatheria have been found in several places. These include South America, India, and Antarctica.

Millions of years ago, these continents were connected. They formed the supercontinent Gondwana. During the Eocene period, these areas had warm, lush forests. Gondwanatheria lived in these green environments.

Why Did Gondwanatheria Disappear?

Gondwanatheria lived for millions of years. However, they eventually became extinct. Scientists believe big climate changes might have caused their disappearance.

Around the end of the Eocene period, the Earth's climate changed a lot. This change could have made it hard for Gondwanatheria to find food or survive. These changes might have led to their extinction.
