Gong Qiuxia, also known as Kung Chiu-hsia, was a famous Chinese actress and singer. She was born on December 4, 1918, and passed away on September 7, 2004. By the 1940s, she became one of the very popular seven great singing stars in China.

Her Life Story

In 1933, Gong Qiuxia traveled all over Southeast Asia. She was part of a group called the Shanghai Plum Flower Troupe. She performed in many plays, including one called the Five Tiger Generals. Because of her training, she was a very skilled tap dancer. In her early movies, she often showed off this talent. She was one of the few Chinese female stars who could do it all: act, sing, and dance! People even lovingly called her an "older Shirley Temple."

In 1946, she moved to Hong Kong with her husband. Later, in 1967, they moved to Taipei, Taiwan. She passed away in Hong Kong on September 7, 2004. This was exactly ten years before another famous "Seven Great Singing Star," Li Xianglan, also passed away.

Her Acting and Singing Career

Gong Qiuxia made her first movie in 1936. It was called Father Mother Son Daughter. In 1937, she starred in the movie 壓歲錢. From then on, she took filmmaking very seriously. She was best known for playing characters who were mature and often housewives.

Between 1938 and 1980, she acted in many films. The movie 四千金 (Four Daughters) earned her the special nickname "Big Sister." In the 1930s, she was also recognized as one of the three most important mandopop singers. The other two were Zhou Xuan and Bai Hong.

Movies She Starred In

Gong Qiuxia acted in many movies throughout her long career. Some of her early films include Father Mother Son Daughter (1936) and Four Daughters (1937). She continued to star in films for decades, with her last known movie being Rouge in 1980.
