Gonzalo Sorondo Amaro (born October 9, 1979) is a former professional footballer from Uruguay. He played as a central defender. Gonzalo was known for his strong defense on the field. He played for many different clubs during his career. He also represented his country, Uruguay, in international matches. He even played in the 2002 FIFA World Cup. In 2009, he became a citizen of Brazil.

Playing Career

Club Teams

Gonzalo Sorondo started his football journey at a young age. He began playing for the youth team of Defensor Sporting Club in Uruguay. He played there from 1993 to 1997. In 1998, he joined their main team. He played 61 games for Defensor Sporting.

In 2001, Gonzalo moved to Europe. He joined Inter Milan, a famous club in Italy. He played 11 games in his first season there. After that, he was loaned to other clubs. This means he played for them for a short time.

He played for Standard Liège in Belgium in 2003. Then, in 2004, he joined Crystal Palace F.C. in England. He played in the Premier League, England's top football league. In 2005, he was loaned to Charlton Athletic F.C., another English club. He later signed a full contract with Charlton.

After leaving Charlton in 2007, Gonzalo went back to Defensor Sporting Club in Uruguay. Later, he moved to Brazil. He played for Sport Club Internacional from 2007 to 2011. He played 63 games for them. In 2012, he joined Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense. However, he got a serious knee injury during pre-season training. This injury ended his time with the team. He returned to Defensor Sporting Club for his final season in 2013.

International Matches

Gonzalo Sorondo also played for his country, Uruguay. He was part of the Uruguay national football team. He first played for the Uruguay Under-20 team. He took part in the 1999 FIFA World Youth Championship. Uruguay finished in 4th place in that tournament.

He made his debut for the senior national team on August 15, 2000. This was in a game against Colombia. He played in the 2002 FIFA World Cup, which is a very big international tournament. He played 27 games for Uruguay in total. He scored 1 goal for his country. Over the years, injuries sometimes kept him from playing for the national team.
