Eugene "Goo" Kennedy (born August 23, 1949 – died December 8, 2020) was an American professional basketball player. He was known for his skills as a power forward and center. Goo Kennedy played for several teams in both the American Basketball Association (ABA) and the National Basketball Association (NBA) during his career.
College Basketball Star
Goo Kennedy was a talented player even before he turned professional. He played college basketball for one season (1970–1971) at Texas Christian University (TCU). During that year, he was named the Southwest Conference Player of the Year. This award goes to the best player in the conference.
Kennedy helped lead the TCU Horned Frogs to win the conference championship. He was especially good at getting rebounds, which means catching the ball after a missed shot. In that season, he averaged 16.6 rebounds per game. He even grabbed an amazing 28 rebounds in one game against the University of Arkansas.
Professional Career
After his successful college career, Goo Kennedy became a professional basketball player. He spent four seasons playing in the American Basketball Association (ABA). During this time, he played for teams like the Dallas Chaparrals (who later became the San Antonio Spurs), the Spirits of St. Louis, and the Utah Stars.
Later, he played one season in the National Basketball Association (NBA) with the Houston Rockets. Throughout his professional career, Kennedy averaged 8.2 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.
Life Off the Court
Beyond his basketball career, Goo Kennedy was also known for his kind heart. He and his wife, Mary, helped many children by becoming foster parents. Over the years, they raised more than forty foster children.
Goo Kennedy passed away on December 8, 2020, at the age of 71. His daughter, Eugenia, shared the news of his passing.
