The Goodwin Hotel is a famous old hotel and apartment building. It is located in downtown Hartford, Connecticut. This building is special because of its unique English Queen Anne design. It has a beautiful front made of terracotta.
Brothers James J. Goodwin and Rev. Francis Goodwin first built it as apartments. It opened in 1881. Francis Kimball designed the building. He based his design on buildings Rev. Goodwin saw in England. The Goodwin Building grew bigger over time. It expanded in 1891 and again in 1900. Many important people lived there, including J.P. Morgan. He stayed there when he visited his hometown.

History of the Goodwin Hotel
How the Building Changed
In the mid-1980s, the inside of the building was changed a lot. This was to get it ready for a new office tower. This new tower, called Goodwin Square, was finished in 1989. The outside of the old building was kept. It became part of the new Goodwin Square complex.
The Goodwin Hotel is a very important building. It is the main part of a National Register of Historic Places historic area. This area includes three other old buildings from the same time. The Goodwin Hotel officially opened in 1989. It was in the same spot as the old apartment building.
Hotel Closure and Reopening
The hotel was part of the Goodwin Square complex. But it closed on December 29, 2008. It had been losing money for several years. The owners wanted someone to run the hotel. They even offered to lease it for a very low price. But no one could make a deal.
The hotel doors had to be chained shut. This was because they had not been locked in 19 years. The building then faced a period of uncertainty.
A New Beginning
In May 2015, a real estate company bought the Goodwin Square complex. This company was from Wilton. They bought the hotel and the tall office building next to it. They paid $17.6 million at an online auction.
A different company bought the hotel part. This company, Greenwich Hospitality, runs many hotels. They own brands like Hotel Zero Degrees. After a lot of work, the hotel reopened in June 2017. A new restaurant, Harlan Brasserie, also opened there.
