Goomalling is a small town in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia. It is about 45 kilometres (28 miles) north-east of Northam, Western Australia.

The land around Goomalling is mostly used for farming. Farmers here grow wheat and other cereal crops like barley. The town is also a place where farmers can deliver their crops to a big storage facility run by Cooperative Bulk Handling.

Discovering Goomalling's Past

Early Explorers and Settlers

The name Goomalling first appeared on maps in 1846. Explorers named Hillman and Lefroy found a spring here. Hillman wrote that the area had "rich grassy country." This meant it was a good place for animals to graze.

Soon after, people called squatters moved into the area. Squatters were early settlers who used land without officially owning it. George Slater was one of the first, setting up a farm near Goomalling Spring in the early 1850s.

How Goomalling Became a Town

In 1898, the Goomalling Agricultural Hall was opened. This was an important building for farmers and the community.

A railway line from Northam to Goomalling opened in 1902. Because of the railway, the government decided to create a proper town here. Goomalling officially became a town in 1903.

The name "Goomalling" comes from an Aboriginal word. It means "the place of the silver-grey possum." The Noongar word for this type of possum is "Goomal."

Goomalling's Racing History

From 1949 to 1955, Goomalling hosted exciting motor races every year. The races took place on a special circuit using the town's streets. Cars and motorcycles competed in short sprints and handicap races. The main event was a 50-mile race for special racing cars.
