Gorg Blau is a man-made lake, also called a reservoir. It is located on the island of Majorca in the Balearic Islands, which are part of Spain. This reservoir sits in a valley between two mountains, Puig Major and Puig de Massanella.
Since 1971, Gorg Blau has been an important source of drinking water. It supplies water to the city of Palma and nearby areas. It works together with the Cúber reservoir to provide water.
The stream that flows into Gorg Blau is known as Torrent del Gorg Blau or Sa Fosca. This stream is a branch of the Torrent de Pareis. In 2003, the government of the Balearic Islands declared it a natural monument. It is also part of the Serra de Tramuntana World Heritage Site, which is a special protected area.
The History of Gorg Blau
Before 1971, the name Gorg Blau referred to a natural stream. This stream was a branch of the Torrent de Pareis. A bridge crossed this stream on the road leading to the town of Sóller.
Building the Reservoir
In 1906, a special dam was built on the Gorg Blau stream. This dam was created to produce electricity from water power. The dam's construction led to the creation of the large reservoir we see today. When the reservoir was made, the old bridge was removed. A new road was built that now goes through a tunnel for cars.
Gorg Blau's Natural Beauty
Before the reservoir was built, the area around the old bridge was famous for its stunning beauty. The spot where the water, the bridge, and tall cliffs met was very inspiring. Many artists, including poets, photographers, and painters, found ideas for their work there.
