Alonzo Keith Mathis Jr. (born March 15, 1983), known as Gorilla Zoe, is an American rapper. He is from East Point, Georgia. In 2006, he joined the hip hop group Boyz n da Hood. This was after their main member, Jeezy, left the group.

His first album with Boyz n da Hood was Back Up n da Chevy in 2007. It did not become very popular, and the group later broke up. After that, Gorilla Zoe signed with Bad Boy Records. He then released his first solo album, Welcome to the Zoo, in 2007. This album reached the top 20 on the Billboard music chart. It included his popular song "Hood ...". His second album, Don't Feed Da Animals (2009), reached the top ten on the same chart.

About Gorilla Zoe's Music Journey

Starting His Career

In 2006, Alonzo Mathis became a member of Boyz N Da Hood. He took the place of Young Jeezy. Gorilla Zoe first became well-known by working with Yung Joc. Their songs "Coffee Shop" and "Bottle Poppin'" were popular. These songs appeared on several Billboard music charts. Soon after, he signed as a solo artist with Block Entertainment and Bad Boy South.

First Solo Albums

On April 24, 2007, Gorilla Zoe released his first solo song, "Hood Figga". This song was a hit, reaching number 38 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. His first solo album, Welcome to the Zoo, came out in October 2007. It reached number 18 on the Billboard 200 chart. It also reached number 8 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. In 2007, Gorilla Zoe was chosen for the 2008 XXL Freshmen cover. This cover highlights new and rising rappers.

More Success and New Music

On October 7, 2008, Gorilla Zoe released "Lost". This was the first song from his second album. The full album, Don't Feed da Animals, was released on March 17, 2009. It became number one on the Billboard Top Rap Albums chart. It sold 29,000 copies in its first week. The album reached number 8 on the Billboard 200 chart. Later, he released two more songs from the album: "What It Is" and "Echo".

In February 2010, Gorilla Zoe released a new mixtape every day. He also released an EP called I Am Atlanta 3. An EP is like a mini-album with fewer songs.

Later Albums and Independent Work

On June 14, 2011, Gorilla Zoe released his third solo album, King Kong. This album was not as popular as his earlier ones. It reached number 56 on the Billboard 200 chart. It sold about 10,300 copies in its first week. A song from this album, "What's Goin' On", was released in December 2010. It reached number 99 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart.

After a break of two years, Gorilla Zoe released a new mixtape called Recovery on May 6, 2014. It was also announced that he had signed with rapper Flo Rida's music label. In July 2018, Gorilla Zoe released "Fat Jesus". This was his first song as an independent artist, meaning he released it without a major record label.
