History of East Point
The name "East Point" tells us where the city is located. It's the eastern end of the old Atlanta & West Point Railroad line. West Point, Georgia, was the western end.
This settlement began in 1870 as a railroad stop. Only 16 families lived there at first. But it grew quickly because it was a good place for businesses. Soon, it had the railway, two mills for grinding grain, and a government distillery. One of the first big buildings was a factory called White Hickory Manufacturing Company.
By 1880, East Point had two churches and a school. It also had a cotton gin, a sawmill, and a post office. There was even a telegraph office and its own weekly newspaper, The Plow Boy. East Point was known for growing grain and cotton. Because of its nice weather and easy access to the railway, people from Atlanta would visit it for summer vacations.
In 1884, the first telephone arrived in East Point. In 1887, the city officially received its first charter, which is like a special permission to govern itself. By 1890, more land was developed for homes and businesses. Main Street was finished in 1892, even though some people thought it wasn't needed. By the early 1900s, East Point was ready to become the bigger city it is today.
In 2015 and 2016, parts of the popular Netflix show Stranger Things were filmed here. The outside of the First Baptist Church was used as a hospital in the show. Also, the recording studio for Dungeon Family, a famous music group, was originally in East Point. This helped shape the sound of Atlanta hip hop music.
