What Makes Gourock Pool Special?
This amazing pool uses salt water from the nearby Firth of Clyde. Don't worry, the water is carefully filtered and cleaned. It's also kept nice and warm, at least 29 °C (84 °F) (about 84°F).
Fun Features and Facilities
Besides the main pool, there's a gym if you like to work out. There's also a separate pool just for younger children. The lido is open for swimming during the warmer months, usually from May until the first week of September.
The main pool is quite long, measuring 33.3 meters (about 109 feet). This length is perfect for games like water polo, with a goal at each end. The pool is managed by a group called Inverclyde Leisure.
A Dip into History
The Gourock Outdoor Pool first opened its doors way back in 1909. Imagine swimming there over a hundred years ago! The heating system, which keeps the water warm, was added later in 1969.
Modern Upgrades and Improvements
After the summer season in 2010, the pool closed for a big renovation project. It reopened in late 2011, looking much more modern. The old changing rooms were replaced with a new leisure centre. This new centre included a bigger gym and an elevator. The elevator makes it easy to get from the street down to the changing rooms and the updated pool.
A Famous Photo
In 2004, a famous photographer named Martin Parr took a picture of the pool. Years later, in 2023, this photo was chosen for the album cover of The Ballad of Darren. This is an album by the popular rock band Blur.
