History of Govan Athletic
The Govan Athletic club started in 1885. They played their first recorded football games during the 1885–86 season.
Playing in the Scottish Cup
Govan Athletic joined the Scottish Cup for the first time in the 1886–87 season. Their first game was against Rangers. The Govan team was very young and lost badly, 9–1. Their only goal was scored by Barclay just before half-time.
The club seemed to have big plans. They even had a second team (a reserve XI) by the 1886–87 season. They also played a friendly match against Glentoran in Belfast. In that game, Govan Athletic lost a four-goal lead, ending in a 5–5 draw.
However, their big plans didn't last long. The second team was removed from the Second Eleven Association because they didn't pay their fees. The main team also lost badly in the first round of the 1887–88 Scottish Cup. They were defeated 5–1 by Northern.
A Player's Injury
During this time, one of their players, David McGhee, got a broken leg. This happened during a tackle in a game against Vale of Bannock. The Vale of Bannock club held a special concert to help McGhee. They raised £7 for him, which was a good amount of money back then.
Tough Times and Big Losses
Before the 1888–89 season began, one of Govan Athletic's best players, Archibald, left to join Sunderland Albion. Even so, Govan Athletic won their first game of the season. They beat Union of Dumbarton 5–2 at their home ground, Moore Park.
But just one week later, the club faced a huge defeat in the 1888–89 Scottish Cup. They lost 16–0 to Kelvinside Athletic. At half-time, Govan was already losing 6–0. After Kelvinside scored another goal, two Govan players walked off the field.
Local Competitions
Govan Athletic also struggled in local competitions. The only competitive game they are known to have won was in the Govan Charity Cup in 1886–87. They beat Blairvaddick 3–1. After that, they lost 5–1 to Linthouse.
In the 1887–88 Jubilee Cup, Govan Athletic lost 11–0 at home to Renfrew. For the 1888–89 Jubilee Cup, they pulled out of their first-round match. This was because several players were missing. The game was played as a friendly instead, and Whitefield won 13–0. Govan Athletic also played one game in the Glasgow Cup in 1888–89, losing 8–2 to Pollokshaws Harp.
Govan Athletic continued playing until the end of the season. However, they were removed from the official club list before the 1889–90 season. Their last known game was a 4–1 loss to Linthouse on May 8, 1889. This game was part of the Govan & Ibrox Cup.
Team Colours
The club's uniform colours were black and white horizontal stripes. They wore blue shorts.
Home Ground
Govan Athletic played their home games at Moore Park. This ground was located on Broomloan Road. Another club, Govan F.C., had used Moore Park before them. That club stopped playing around 1881.
