Governor General of New France facts for kids
The Governor General of New France was a very important leader in New France from 1663 until 1760. This person was like the king's main representative in the colony. They were the highest French official there.
After 1760, when New France became part of the British Empire, this role was replaced by the British Governor of the Province of Quebec. Even though cities like Montreal and Trois-Rivières had their own governors, the Governor of Quebec City was also the main Governor General for all of New France. Their job was to act for the king and make sure his rules were followed in the colony.
Who Were the Governors General?
The Governors General were chosen by the King of France to lead New France. They were in charge of many things, like the military, justice, and making sure the colony grew. Below is a list of these important leaders and when they served.
