The governor of Sint Maarten is like a special helper for the King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands in Sint Maarten. Think of them as the King's main representative on the island.
The governor has two important jobs. First, they make sure the overall goals and interests of the Kingdom of the Netherlands are looked after in Sint Maarten. Second, they are the leader of Sint Maarten's own government.
While doing their job, the governor is protected. They help put government decisions into action. They work closely with ministers, who are responsible to the Estates of Sint Maarten, which is like Sint Maarten's parliament. The governor is not a politician and is not part of the group of ministers who run the government day-to-day. However, they play an important role when a new government is being formed.
The King appoints the governor for a term of six years. This term can be extended for another six years. A team called the governor's cabinet helps the governor with their daily tasks. The governor also gets advice from a group called the Council of Advice. This council has at least five members and helps the governor with ideas for new laws and rules.
