Governor of Taganrog facts for kids
The Governor of Taganrog was like the main boss or leader of the city of Taganrog a long time ago. This special job was created on October 8, 1802, and it lasted until May 19, 1887. Taganrog was a special city, almost like its own small state, with extra rights given by the king.
For some years, from 1816 to 1834, Taganrog was also the center of a larger area called a uezd. This area included other important cities like Rostov on Don, Nakhichevan on Don, and Mariupol. Later, Rostov became part of a different region in 1834. Nakhichevan and Mariupol stayed connected to Taganrog's governor until 1859.

Why Taganrog Needed Governors
By the end of the 1700s, Taganrog was no longer a main military base. Russia had taken control of Crimea and the Azov Sea. This meant cities along the Black Sea and Azov Sea started to become important places for trade.
To help trade grow, Alexander I of Russia, who was the emperor, created a new job: the governor (called gradonachalnik in Russian). These governors reported directly to the emperor. This special governor role was used in a few Russian cities at different times, including Odessa, Taganrog, Feodosiya, and Kerch.
The emperor chose energetic and creative people for these jobs. The governor worked alongside the Head of the City or mayor (called gorodskoy golova). Together, they helped trade grow and made life better for the people living in the city.
