A Look Back: History of the Governor
How the Role Changed Over Time
A long time ago, in 1911, the capital of India was moved from Calcutta (now Kolkata) to Delhi. To make up for this change in Bengal, the leader known as the "lieutenant governor" was replaced. A full "governor" with a special council took over. This brought the role back to how it was about 200 years before. When India became independent in 1947, the title "Governor of Bengal" stayed the same.
What the Governor Does: Powers and Duties
Important Roles and Responsibilities
The Governor of West Bengal has several important jobs and powers. These powers help them manage the state and ensure things run smoothly.
- Executive Powers: These are about managing the state's daily business. The governor helps with appointments and removals of officials.
- Legislative Powers: These powers are about making laws. The governor works with the state's law-making body, like the Vidhan Sabha.
- Discretionary Powers: Sometimes, the governor can make decisions on their own. These are special powers used when needed.
Governor's Special Roles: Ex Officio Positions
The governor also holds many special positions just by being the governor. This is called an ex officio role. For example, the Governor of West Bengal is the head, or Chancellor, of many universities in the state. This means they oversee these important educational institutions.
The governor is also the chairman or president of several important organizations. These include places like the Victoria Memorial Hall and the Indian Museum. They also lead groups like the Indian Red Cross Society in West Bengal.
The Governor of West Bengal also chairs a special fund called the Governor’s Welfare Fund. This fund helps people who are in need, especially with medical treatment costs. The governor often accepts honorary positions in other groups too. These groups do good work for society in many different areas.
