Grabovica (Kotor-Varoš) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Grabovica is a small settlement located in central Bosnia and Herzegovina. It sits right on the beautiful Vrbanja river. This area is part of the Kotor Varoš municipality.

Where is Grabovica?

Grabovica is found where the Grabovička river flows into the Vrbanja river. This is like where a small stream joins a bigger river. The older part of the village is about 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) (almost 2 miles) further up the Vrbanja river. Grabovica is about 450 metres (1,480 ft) (around 1,476 feet) above sea level. It's about 55 kilometres (34 mi) (34 miles) from a larger city called Banja Luka. It's also about 23 kilometres (14 mi) (14 miles) from Kotor Varoš and 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) (5 miles) from Šiprage.

History of Grabovica

During the Bosnian War in the 1990s, Grabovica was affected by the conflict. Sadly, many people from nearby villages, especially from Večići and its surrounding areas, were lost or displaced. For example, about 200 people from Večići who were in Grabovica's elementary school during the war were never seen again. Their final resting place has not yet been found. This shows how difficult and sad the war was for many communities.

Population Changes

The number of people living in Grabovica has changed over the years. Here's a look at the population counts from different census years:

  • In 1991, there were 887 people living in Grabovica. Most of them, about 98%, were Serbs.
  • In 1981, the population was 1,072 people. Again, most residents were Serbs, making up over 99% of the population.
  • In 1971, Grabovica had 1,216 residents. Serbs were the largest group, accounting for almost 99% of the population.

As you can see, the population decreased between 1971 and 1991. The village has historically been home to a large majority of Serbs, with very few people from other groups like Bosniaks or Croats.
