Grace Church in Kilmarnock, Lancaster County, Virginia, is a very important and large church. It's the biggest rural Episcopal church building in the whole state of Virginia!

A Look Back at Grace Church

Early Beginnings

The first building for Grace Church was made of brick. It was the very first church in Kilmarnock! An assistant bishop named John Johns officially opened it in 1852. Today, this old building is a chapel connected to the main church.

For many years, Grace Church shared its main priest, called a rector, with other old churches nearby. These included Christ Church (started in 1670), St. Mary's Church Whitechapel (started in 1669), and Trinity Church in Lancaster.

Growing Over Time

The main part of the church you see today was opened in 1959 by Bishop Goodwin. A special walkway, called an arcade, connects this newer part to the original old church building.

The church continued to grow! In 1988, Bishop Peter James Lee officially opened an expanded building called Grace House. Even more additions were made in 2002.

A Historic Landmark

Because of its long history and importance, the Grace Church building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2017. This means it's recognized as a special historic place in the United States.
