Early Life and First Steps in Fashion
Grace Coddington was born on the island of Anglesey in Wales. Her parents owned a hotel. She became interested in fashion as a teenager. She would eagerly wait for the newest issue of Vogue magazine to arrive. Because she lived far from big cities, the magazine was her only link to the world of high fashion.
Grace said she loved the stylish and elegant world she saw in Vogue. It was very different from her own life. As a teenager, she went to a convent school and didn't travel much. Looking at the pictures in Vogue was her way of exploring a bigger world.
Career in the Fashion World
From Model to Editor
When Grace was 18, someone sent her photos to a modeling contest held by Vogue. She won the "Young Model" part of the contest. Soon after, she began a successful career as a model for the magazine.
At age 26, she was in a serious car accident. The accident paused her modeling career, and she needed plastic surgery to recover from her injuries.
Two years later, in 1969, Grace started a new chapter in her career. She was hired as a Junior Editor at British Vogue. She worked there for 19 years, becoming the Photo Editor. In 1988, she moved to New York City to work for the designer Calvin Klein.
Working at American Vogue
In July 1988, Grace joined the team at American Vogue, working with the famous editor Anna Wintour. She became the magazine's creative director. In this role, she was in charge of the style and look of the magazine's photoshoots.
In January 2016, Grace stepped down from her full-time role at Vogue to work on other projects. She soon began working with the jewelry company Tiffany & Co. on their advertising campaigns. She also worked with the brand Louis Vuitton in 2018 on a special collection that included designs of her beloved cats.
Appearing in The September Issue
In 2009, Grace became well-known to the public because of the documentary film The September Issue. The movie shows what it's like to create the most important issue of Vogue magazine for the year.
Grace has a major role in the film. Viewers can see her working hard on the photoshoots. The film also shows her creative discussions and disagreements with her boss, Anna Wintour.
Personal Life
Grace Coddington was married to restaurant owner Michael Chow in 1968, and they divorced a year later. She later married photographer Willie Christie, and they divorced in 1980.
After her sister passed away, Grace raised her nephew.
Since 1986, she has lived in New York City with her partner, hair stylist Didier Malige. They share their home with several cats.
In 2012, she published her life story, a memoir called Grace. A film company later bought the rights to make a movie based on her book.
