At Grace Dieu Quarry, you can see a thin layer of rock called Carboniferous Limestone. This limestone formed about 340 million years ago! Back then, this part of England was covered by a shallow sea. The Midland shoreline was very close by. The limestone formed from the shells and skeletons of tiny sea creatures that lived in that ancient sea.
