Early Life and Education

Grace Gallatin was born in Sacramento, California on January 28, 1872. When she was 16, she started writing for San Francisco newspapers. She used the pen name Dorothy Dodge. In 1892, she finished her studies at the Packer Collegiate Institute in Brooklyn, NY.

Her Career

Writing Books and Traveling

In 1900, Grace Seton published her first book. It was called A Woman Tenderfoot. This book told the story of her horseback trip through the Rocky Mountains. In 1907, she wrote Nimrod's Wife. This book was about hunting and travel in the Western United States.

Later, she helped soldiers in France during World War I. She organized a special motor unit for women. In the 1920s and 1930s, she traveled a lot. She visited places like China, Egypt, India, and Japan. She wrote four books about her amazing journeys:

  • A Woman Tenderfoot in Egypt (1923)
  • Chinese Lanterns (1924)
  • Yes, Lady Saheb (1925)
  • Poison Arrows (1938)

During her time as president, the number of branches for this group doubled. She also led the letters committee for the National Council of Women of the United States.

As part of her work, she created the Biblioteca Femina. This was a collection of books written by women from all over the world. Her Marriage

Later, some disagreements came up with the Boy Scouts. This was partly because of Grace's work for women's voting rights. Also, Ernest was a British citizen. The Boy Scouts wanted their leaders to be U.S. citizens. Ernest decided to leave the Boy Scouts in 1915.

Grace and Ernest separated in the late 1920s. They divorced in 1935. Their daughter, Anya Seton, was also a famous writer. She was born in 1904.
