Gracy, California facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Gracy was once a small community in Mendocino County, California. It was located near a railroad, about 16 kilometers (10 miles) east of Fort Bragg. Gracy is no longer an active settlement, meaning people do not live there anymore.

What Was Gracy?

Gracy was a "former settlement." This means it was a place where people once lived and worked, but over time, the community became empty or disappeared. Many small towns like Gracy grew up around specific industries, like logging or mining, or along important transportation routes, such as railroads. When those industries changed or the routes became less important, the towns often faded away.

The Post Office Story

Even though Gracy was a small place, it had its own post office for a while. A post office is a place where people can send and receive mail. The post office in Gracy was open from 1896 to 1908. During those years, the post office actually moved its location several times within the Gracy area. It moved in 1899, then again in 1902, and finally in 1905, before closing permanently in 1908. The closing of the post office often signals that a community is shrinking or no longer needs its own mail service.
