Grady is a small, quiet place in Jefferson County, Oklahoma, in the United States. It's what we call an unincorporated community. This means it's not officially a town or city with its own local government. Instead, it's a group of homes and buildings that are part of the larger county. Grady got its name from Henry W. Grady. The first post office here opened a long time ago, on June 16, 1890. The special code for mail in Grady is 73569.

Discovering Grady, Oklahoma

Where is Grady?

Grady is located in the southeastern part of Jefferson County. You can find it along State Highway 32. It's southeast of Waurika, which is the main town, or "county seat," of Jefferson County.

A Look at Grady's Past

Grady used to be a busier place with several important buildings and services.

The Old School

The town had its own school for many years. It taught local children until about 1967. After that, the school closed. Students then had the choice to attend schools in nearby towns like Ringling or Ryan.

Businesses and Community Life

Besides the school, Grady had other places that were important for daily life.

  • There was a grocery store where people could buy food and supplies.
  • A cotton gin helped process cotton, which was likely a big crop in the area.
  • A blacksmith shop fixed metal tools and made new ones.
  • The town even had its own doctor to help people when they were sick.

The Town Church

The church in Grady played a special role in the community. For most Sundays of the month, it served as a Baptist church. On the other remaining Sunday, it became a Methodist church. This continued until around 1952. After that, it changed to be a Methodist-only church. It operated as a Methodist church until about 1958.

What's in Grady Today?

Today, Grady is much quieter than it used to be. Most of the old businesses are gone. Now, you will mostly find a few houses. There is also a nice metal building that serves as the community center. This center is a place where people from Grady can gather for events and meetings.
