What is a Municipality?
A municipality is like a local government area. Think of it as a town or a group of villages that work together. They have their own local rules and services. Grafschaft was one of these small local areas in Switzerland.
How Grafschaft Changed Over Time
Over the years, many small municipalities in Switzerland have joined together. This happens to make local government more efficient. Grafschaft also went through these changes, merging with its neighbors more than once.
First Merger: 2001
On January 1, 2001, three smaller municipalities decided to become one. These were Biel, Ritzingen, and Selkingen. They all joined together to form the new municipality of Grafschaft. This made the area bigger and stronger.
Second Merger: 2017
Later, on January 1, 2017, Grafschaft itself became part of an even larger group. It merged with four other municipalities:
All these areas combined to create a brand new, larger municipality called Goms. So, while Grafschaft no longer exists as a separate municipality, its history lives on as part of the bigger Goms area.
