Reckingen-Gluringen was a small town in Switzerland. It was located in the Valais canton, in an area called Goms. This town was created in 2004 when two villages, Reckingen and Gluringen, joined together. Later, on January 1, 2017, Reckingen-Gluringen and several other nearby towns merged to form a bigger new town called Goms.

History of Reckingen-Gluringen

The village of Reckingen was first mentioned in old documents in the year 1225. It was called Requinguen back then. Gluringen is even older, first appearing in records in 1203. A famous person named Joseph Biner was born in Gluringen in 1697. He was a Roman Catholic expert in church law, a historian, and a theologian.

Geography and Landscape

Reckingen-Gluringen covered an area of about 41.3 square kilometers (about 16 square miles). A good part of this land, about 27.6%, was used for farming. Forests covered 19.4% of the area. Only a small part, 1.2%, had buildings or roads. More than half of the land, 51.8%, was unproductive, meaning it wasn't used for farming or building.

Reckingen is located on both sides of the Rhone river, which flows through the valley. It's made up of three parts that are not directly connected. Gluringen is situated on the northern side of the Rhone valley.

Reckingen-Gluringen had a population of about 550 people. Over the years, the population changed a bit. Some people moved away, and some moved in.

In 2008, about half of the people were male and half were female. Most of the people living there were Swiss citizens. A small number, about 6.9%, were people from other countries.

When it came to age, in 2000, about 25.9% of the population were children and teenagers (under 19 years old). Adults (20-64 years old) made up 56.1%, and older people (over 64 years old) were 18% of the population.

Languages Spoken

In Reckingen, most people spoke German as their main language. A few people also spoke French or Serbo-Croatian.

In Gluringen, most people also spoke German. Some people spoke Serbo-Croatian or Portuguese.

Many people in Reckingen and Gluringen were born in their respective villages. Others were born in the same canton (Valais), or elsewhere in Switzerland. Some residents were born outside of Switzerland.
