List of former municipalities of Switzerland facts for kids
Switzerland is a country made up of many small areas called municipalities. Think of them like local towns or districts. Over time, these municipalities can change. Some might join together, or a part of one might become part of another. This list is all about the municipalities in Switzerland that used to exist but don't anymore.
In 1850, Switzerland had 3,203 municipalities. By January 1, 2022, this number had dropped to 2,148. This shows that many smaller municipalities have merged or been absorbed into larger ones over the years.

Why do Municipalities Change?
Joining Forces: Mergers and Incorporations
Municipalities often change for a few main reasons. One big reason is to make things more efficient. When smaller towns or villages join together, they can share resources like schools, police, and fire departments. This can save money and make services better for everyone.
- Mergers: This is when two or more municipalities combine to form a brand new one. For example, Agra, Gentilino, and Montagnola merged to create Collina d'Oro in 2004.
- Incorporations: This happens when a smaller municipality becomes part of a larger, existing one. For instance, Aawangen became part of Aadorf in 1996.
Splitting Up: When Municipalities Divide
Sometimes, a municipality might split into two or more new ones. This can happen if a large area decides it wants to manage its own affairs separately. For example, Arni-Islisberg split into Arni and Islisberg in 1983.
