World Heritage Site: Port-Conty Pile Dwellings

One of the most special sites is the Port-Conty prehistoric pile-dwelling settlement. It is part of the Prehistoric Pile dwellings around the Alps UNESCO World Heritage Site. This means it is recognized globally as very important.

Port-Conty has two ancient settlements from the Stone Age (Neolithic period). The first village belongs to the Late Cortaillod culture. A piece of wood from this site has been dated to 3574 BC. The second village is from the Late Horgen culture. Some wooden piles from this village date back to 3160 BC and 3159 BC. Others are from 3064 BC and 3062 BC.

This site was first found in 1860 by F. Troyon. He initially thought it was from the Bronze Age. Later digs in the late 1800s and early 1900s showed it was actually from the Neolithic period. From 1929 to 1932, P. Vouga dug a long trench to study the site. He found three different layers of archaeological remains. These layers showed settlements from the Middle Neolithic, Late Neolithic, and the very end of the Late Neolithic. It seems the site was covered by a human-made mound of earth.
