Domleschg is a cool place in Switzerland. It's a special kind of town called a municipality. You can find it in the Graubünden area, which is a canton (like a state) in Switzerland.

Domleschg was created on January 1, 2015. Before that, it was five smaller towns: Almens, Paspels, Pratval, Rodels, and Tomils. They all decided to join together to form one bigger municipality!

A Look Back: Domleschg's History

The towns that make up Domleschg have a long history. Some of them are very old!

For example, the village of Almens was first mentioned way back in the early 800s. That's over 1200 years ago! Paspels was first written about in 1237. Pratval appeared in records in 1345, and Rodels in the mid-1100s.

The town of Tomils itself was formed more recently, on January 1, 2009. It brought together four even smaller places: Feldis/Veulden, Scheid, Trans, and Tumegl/Tomils. So, Domleschg is a new name for a place with a very old past!

Exploring Domleschg's Geography

Domleschg covers a total area of about 46 square kilometers (around 17.7 square miles). That's quite a bit of land!

Most of this land is covered by beautiful forests, about half of it. Another big part, over a third, is used for farming. This means there are lots of fields and pastures where animals graze.

A smaller part of the land, about 3%, has buildings and roads. There are also some rivers and lakes, and a bit of land that's too rocky or wild for farming or building. It's a mix of nature and human activity!

People of Domleschg

As of December 2013, about 1,941 people lived in the area that now makes up Domleschg. The population changes over time, but it's a friendly community.

Important Historic Places

Domleschg is home to several important historical sites. These places are so special that they are listed as Swiss heritage sites of national importance!

Some of these cool places include:

  • The Church of S. Luregn/St. Lorenz in Paspels.
  • The Chapel of S. Maria-Magdalena in a small area called Dusch.
  • Rietberg Castle in Pratval.
  • The church of St. Maria E Maurezzi.
  • The old church of St. Murezzi from the early Middle Ages.
  • Ortenstein Castle in Tomils.

The Church of S. Luregn/St. Lorenz was first mentioned in 1237. It was an important church for the people living on the right side of the Hinterrhein valley. The Chapel of S. Maria-Magdalena was built in 1508. It was used by a monastery at first. Later, in the 1500s, the people in Dusch changed their religion during the Reformation, and the chapel changed too.

The areas around Paspels and Tumegl/Tomils-Ortenstein, as well as the village of Almens, are also recognized as important Swiss heritage sites. This means they have special historical value!
