History of Reitnau
Reitnau was first mentioned in old records in the year 1045. Back then, it was called Reitinouwa. The village originally belonged to a powerful family known as the Counts of Lenzburg.
Early Ownership and Changes
In 1045, Reitnau and its church were given to a convent (a community of religious women) in Schänis. A representative from the convent managed the property.
After the region of Aargau was taken over in 1415, Reitnau became part of Bern. It was managed as part of a larger area called a bailiwick (an area controlled by a local official) of Lenzburg. Even so, the local court for Reitnau continued to be held in Schänis.
Reitnau remained part of Bern until 1798. Then, in 1803, it became its own municipality in the new canton of Aargau.
Education and Church Development
In 1873, Reitnau opened its first school building. Later, in 1905, it received a larger district school. The church's management was moved from the Schänis convent to private owners in 1807. By 1850, the local district took over its administration. There was a church in the village before the year 900, but the building you see today was built around 1522.
