About Oberwald
Oberwald is a quiet place with a small population. In December 2007, about 277 people lived there. The village is located at an elevation of 1,377 meters (about 4,518 feet) above sea level. This high altitude makes it a great spot for mountain activities.
Location and Nature
Oberwald is at the very end of the Goms valley. It is a key spot before reaching two important mountain passes: the Furka Pass and the Grimsel Pass. The famous Rhône River also starts nearby, flowing from the Rhône Glacier.
The village is also important for travel. It is the starting point of the Furka Tunnel, which helps trains cross the mountains. The village has its own train station, Oberwald railway station, making it easy to visit.
Life in Oberwald
Life in Oberwald is closely linked to its natural surroundings. Many people in the village work in tourism. This means they help visitors enjoy the beautiful mountains and outdoor activities. Another important job in Oberwald is sheep farming. Farmers raise sheep, which is a traditional way of life in this area.
A Bit of History
For a long time, Oberwald was its own independent municipality. This means it had its own local government. However, on January 1, 2009, things changed. Oberwald joined with two other nearby villages, Ulrichen and Obergesteln. Together, they formed the new and larger municipality of Obergoms. This merger helped the villages work together more closely.
