Before it merged, Charmey was a large area, about 78.5 square kilometers (30.3 square miles). A big part of this land, almost 45%, was used for farming. About 36% of the area was covered by forests.

A small part, about 2%, had buildings and roads. Less than 1% was rivers or lakes. The rest, about 16%, was land that couldn't be used for farming or building. This included rocky areas or places with wild plants.

Charmey is located in the Gruyère district. It sits in the valley of the Jaun stream. It was the biggest municipality in the Fribourg area. Charmey includes the main village, six smaller villages called hamlets, and several small mountain settlements. Part of the beautiful lake Schwarzsee/Lac Noir is also in Charmey.
