Jaun (also known as Bellegarde in French) is a small town, called a municipality, in Switzerland. It is located in the Gruyère district within the Fribourg canton. Jaun is special because it's the only German-speaking town in the Gruyère district, where most people speak French.

History of Jaun

Jaun has a long history! It was first mentioned in old documents way back in 1228. At that time, it was known by the name Balavarda. Later, in 1397, its name changed to Youn, which is closer to how we say Jaun today.

Jaun covers an area of about 55.2 square kilometers (about 21.3 square miles). A large part of this land, about 42.5%, is used for farming. Forests cover another big part, about 38.9% of the area.

Only a small portion, about 1.7%, has buildings or roads. Rivers and lakes make up about 0.8% of the land. The remaining 16.1% is land that isn't used for farming or building, like rocky areas.

Jaun is located in the Jaun Pass, which is a mountain pass. It sits at an elevation of about 1,027 meters (3,369 feet) above sea level. The town includes the main village of Jaun and smaller areas called hamlets. These hamlets include Im Fang, Kappelboden, Weibelsried, and Zur Eich. There are also many scattered farmhouses.

The Jaun Pass is an important route. It connects Jaun with the town of Boltigen in the canton of Bern.
