Mézières was once a small town, or municipality, located in the Lavaux-Oron area of the canton of Vaud in Switzerland. In 2016, Mézières joined with two other towns, Carrouge and Ferlens, to form a new, bigger municipality called Jorat-Mézières.

History of Mézières

Mézières is quite old! The first time it was ever written about was in the year 1228. Back then, it was known by a slightly different name: Messeretes.

Mézières covers an area of about 3.5 square kilometers (1.4 square miles). Imagine a square about 1.8 kilometers (1.1 miles) on each side – that's roughly the size!

Most of this land is used for farming. About 61% of the area is farmland. Forests cover another 23% of the land. The remaining 16% is where buildings, roads, and other developed areas are.

  • Farmland: A big part of the farmland (38%) is used for growing crops. About 21% is used for pastures where animals graze. A small part (1.7%) has orchards or vineyards.
  • Forests: Most of the forested land (19.3% of the total area) is dense forest. The rest (4%) has smaller groups of trees or orchards.
  • Developed Areas: In the built-up areas, about 8.6% is covered by houses and other buildings. Roads and other ways to get around make up 5.7%.

Mézières is located in a region called Jorat. It sits where two important roads meet: one goes from Vevey to Moudon, and the other from Oron to Echallens. The town itself is a long village, meaning buildings are spread out along a main road.
