Vaud is a beautiful canton (like a state or region) in Switzerland. It shares borders with several other cantons. These include Geneva, Neuchâtel, Fribourg, Berne, and Valais.
The main city and capital of Vaud is Lausanne. Around 790,000 people live in the canton of Vaud. About 138,000 of these people live in Lausanne. Most people in Vaud, about 82%, speak French as their main language.

How Vaud is Organized: Districts
The canton of Vaud is divided into smaller areas called districts. These districts help manage the region. The way these districts are set up has changed over time.
Vaud's Districts Before 2008
From 1803 until 2007, the canton of Vaud had 19 districts. Each district had its own main town, called a capital.

Since 2008, the canton of Vaud has been reorganized. Now, there are only 10 districts. This change helps to make the local government more efficient.
