Nufenen is a small village in Switzerland. It is located in the Viamala Region in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. Nufenen used to be its own municipality.
On January 1, 2019, Nufenen joined with two other villages, Hinterrhein and Splügen. Together, they formed a new, larger municipality called Rheinwald.

Nufenen's History
Nufenen has had a few different names over time. It was first written about in the year 1343. Back then, it was called Ovena. Later, in 1633, people started calling it Nufena.
In the Romansh language, which is spoken in parts of Switzerland, Nufenen was known as Nueinas. In Italian, it used to be called Novena.
Where is Nufenen?
Nufenen covers an area of about 28.1 square kilometers (about 10.8 square miles). A big part of this land, about 54.9%, is used for farming. Forests cover another 14.8% of the area.
Only a small part, 0.9%, has buildings or roads. The rest of the land, about 29.5%, is made up of things like rivers, glaciers, or mountains. This means much of Nufenen is natural and wild.
The village of Nufenen is built in a special way called a haufendorf. This means it's an unplanned village with buildings close together around a central area. It is located along the road that leads to the San Bernardino tunnel. Until the 1700s, about fifteen farmhouses surrounded the main village.
People of Nufenen
Nufenen has a small population. As of 2022, there were 127 people living there. About 4.6% of the people living in Nufenen in 2008 were from other countries. Over the ten years before that, the number of people living in Nufenen grew by about 10.2%.
In 2000, more than half of the people were male (55.6%). The rest were female (44.4%). The village has people of all ages. For example, about 13.4% of the people were children under 10 years old. About 19.7% of the people were between 50 and 59 years old.
In the 2007 Swiss national election, the SVP was the most popular party. They received 61.7% of the votes. The SPS came in second with 27.5% of the votes.
Many adults in Nufenen have a good education. About 71.4% of people aged 25-64 have finished high school or gone on to higher education. This could be a university or a special college.
Nufenen has a very low unemployment rate, which means almost everyone who wants a job has one. In 2005, 43 people worked in farming. There were 15 businesses related to farming. Two people worked in manufacturing, and 15 people worked in services like shops or tourism.
