Basse-Allaine is a town, also called a municipality, located in the Porrentruy area of the Jura canton in Switzerland. It was formed on January 1, 2009, when three smaller towns – Buix, Courtemaîche, and Montignez – joined together.

The town's name, Basse-Allaine, comes from the Allaine river, which flows right through it.

History of Basse-Allaine

The different parts of Basse-Allaine have long histories.

  • Buix was first mentioned in old records way back in 1136.
  • Courtemaîche appeared in records a bit later, in 1139.
  • Montignez is the oldest, first mentioned in 731! This means people have lived and known about these places for a very long time.

Geography of Basse-Allaine

Basse-Allaine covers an area of about 23 square kilometers (about 9 square miles). Here's how the land is used:

  • Farmland: Nearly half of the area (43.9%) is used for farming. This includes fields for growing crops, pastures for animals, and even some orchards.
  • Forests: Another large part (47.5%) is covered by thick forests.
  • Buildings and Roads: About 7.4% of the land has buildings or roads on it.
  • Rivers and Lakes: A small part (0.4%) is made up of rivers, as the Allaine river runs through the municipality.
  • Unused Land: A tiny bit (0.5%) is land that isn't used for anything specific.

The municipality includes the main villages of Buix, Courtemaîche, and Montignez. It also has a smaller settlement called Le Maira and the land around the old Grandgourt priory (a type of monastery).

  • Prairie Dessous: This is the site of an old Gallo-Roman villa, which was a large country house from the time of the Roman Empire.
  • Former Priory of Grandgourt: A priory was a type of monastery where monks or nuns lived and prayed. This old building is also very important.

The village of Montignez, the small settlement of Le Maira, and the Grandgourt area are all part of the Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites. This means they are recognized for their special historical and cultural value.

Transportation

Basse-Allaine has good train connections:

  • The municipality has two train stations: Buix and Courtemaîche.
  • Both stations are on the Delémont–Delle line.
  • Trains from these stations regularly go to Biel/Bienne in Switzerland and Meroux in France.
  • A third station, Grandgourt, used to be open but closed in 2022.
